Innovation Day Energia strengthens Catalonia’s role as a driver of innovation in the energy sector

The Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC), the Energy Efficiency Cluster of Catalonia (CEEC) and the R&D&I network Energy for Society (XRE4S), with the support of ICAEN, have co-organised the 7th edition of Innovation Day Energia, an event that once again positions itself as a key meeting point for research talent, deep-tech entrepreneurship, and the Catalan business and industrial ecosystem, bringing together more than 150 attendees.
The event took place at Ca l’Alier, an urban and sustainable innovation centre of the Barcelona City Council, with the aim of fostering high-impact innovation in the energy sector while promoting technological and investment-driven collaboration to advance towards a sustainable, digitalised, and decarbonised model.
The session opened with institutional greetings by the co-organising entities, followed by an inspiring keynote aimed at framing the technological and industrial trends that will shape developments in the coming years.
The core of the event featured roundtables and innovation forums focusing on two key thematic areas: sustainable mobility and its integration into the grid, and the CO₂ economy, including capture, utilisation, and valorisation technologies.
The first roundtable explored the challenges and opportunities of electrification and energy interoperability in land and maritime environments, with contributions from sector experts. The second, centred on the decarbonisation, highlighted models that enable CO₂ to be converted into valuable products. Subsequently, the innovation forums showcased pioneering projects and advanced solutions in electric mobility, smart grids, batteries, fast-charging systems, hydrogen, CO₂ capture, mineralisation, reforming, and valorisation.
At the end of the event, the Merce Lab was presented— a new pre-industrial pilot plant for the manufacturing of energy devices based on functional ceramics printing technology.

A space to generate transformative alliances

Innovation Day Energia reaffirms itself as a key nexus connecting research, industry and innovation capital, with the aim of fostering the technological, industrial, and commercial maturity of critical solutions for the energy transition.
The event concluded by emphasising the need to reinforce strategic collaborations and technological investment programmes that will help consolidate Catalonia as a European hub for energy innovation.
