An IREC researcher gets awarded for his innovative solution for the desalination sector

On the 25th of November, Levon Gevorkov was awarded the Impact award of the Global Prize Innovation in Desalination (GPID) within the category “TRL 1-3 Digital business model Process Optimization and Automation Management”. The GPID is a highly competitive technical contest that recognizes and rewards significant contributions in water desalination, aiming to inspire sustainable water solutions.

The 2024 edition of the GPID was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, during the third edition of the Innovation-Driven Water Sustainability Conference, an event dedicated to advancing water sustainability through innovation and collaboration. In its second edition, the GPID 2024 achieved remarkable participation, with around 540 submissions from 80 universities and research institutions across 56 countries.

Levon’s award was based on his work on innovative solutions for the desalination sector, specifically on proposing the concept of the development of digital twins and AI assisted energy management systems to efficiently control power flow within a desalination plant. As we face unprecedented challenges in climate change and water scarcity around the globe, the need for innovative solutions has never been more pressing. Levon’s work not only demonstrates technical excellence but also addresses critical issues that resonate with GPID’s mission of finding sustainable water solutions. The concept he proposed pushes the boundaries of knowledge and contributes to meaningful advancements in the field.

Currently, Levon Gevorkov is a postdoctoral researcher at the Power Systems Department at IREC, and he is focused on renewable energy sources, energy storage systems, photovoltaic pumping systems, and power electronics.

Congratulations Levon!
