The Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) was founded in July 2008 as an initiative of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
IREC is a public research institute with a public-private Board of Trustees with the participation of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Spanish Government, Universities as well as representatives of the industry sector in the field of energy.
Its research, development and innovation (RDI) activities began in January 2009. Since its inception, the institute strategy and activities have been designed to contribute to the construction of a more sustainable future with excellent research and innovation in the field of energy. Led by internationally recognized researchers and experts in the field, IREC works closely with the Administration and the industrial sector to boost a local and global energy transition that ensures a more sustainable, equitable and inclusive society.
IREC is a CERCA member, an initiative of the Generalitat de Catalunya to support and grow outstanding and competitive research and innovation in Catalunya. The institute is also a TECNIO accredited centre, recognised as a technology developer, which also facilitates the transfer of research to industry.

The foundation of the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research formally announced in different documents of the Official Journal of the Catalan Government:
- AGREEMENT GOV/63/2008, April 8, which announces the Constitution of the Foundation Catalonia Institute for Energy Research bylaw.

IREC is organised into Research Groups and Departments. It is led by a Director who reports to the Board of Trustees and is advised by the Scientific Advisory Board. Learn more about the organization of IREC here.
The institute provides access to a range of services and resources, such as specialised facilities and equipment, together with highly qualified technical assistance. The objective is to contribute to the development of projects of interest for the industrial sector or the scientific community.

The executive summary of the hiring and remuneration policy for personnel linked to the Institute has the objective of ensuring transparency and equal opportunities in all processes, as well as compensating the responsibilities and merit of its personnel, within the framework of the existing possibilities in Catalonia to entities such as the IREC.

Code of Good Corporate Governance
The Catalonia Institute for Energy Research establishes and adopts, through this Code of Good Corporate Governance and Code of Ethics, the set of standards of action, ethical principles, rules and recommendations that guide the actions of the members of its Board of Trustees and of its staff in the development of their functions, to strengthen their management and governance to achieve their founding goals.
In addition, this document complies with Order 152/2018, on September 12th, which determines the level of subjection of foundations and associations declared of public utility to the instruments and obligations of transparency and public information established by Law 21/2014, on 29th December, on the Foundation Protectorate and verification of the activity of this type of entities.
Social Balance
The IREC Social Balance, according to Order JUS / 152/2018 on September 12th, 2018 and according to Law 21/2014 on December 29th, regarding transparency instruments, presents the accountability and social impact measure, environmental and good governance of the center, with the aim of showing, from a social perspective, the impacts of the management of its activity on society, as well as the data of the IREC ethical standards.
This report is the communication instrument to show the activities carried out at the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research and their social repercussion, in order to demonstrate the adequate fulfilment of the functions of the entity and to disseminate the IREC’s research activities.

Relevant legislation
The legal representation of workers within companies is governed by the Workers’ Statute. And the representation of workers in the Foundation’s Board of Trustees is established in accordance with the regulations derived from Article 47 of the Catalan Science Law.
Trade Union release
Information regarding IREC’s trade union release includes personal and internal operational data that are not for public disclosure. Generally, all representatives are entitled to 20 hours monthly for their representation duties, in addition to extra time for specific tasks such as Health and Safety Committee meetings and collective agreement negotiations.
