IREC leads an ITP on Positive Energy Districts

IREC leads an ITP on Positive Energy Districts
  • Smart energy management

Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) are energy-efficient, CO2 emissions free and capable to manage excess energy from renewable sources produced locally. To make them viable, the interaction between buildings, users, ICTs, mobility and regional energy systems must be truly integrated.

ITPs (in Spanish Iniciativas Tecnológicas Prioritarias) are instruments that detect important technological innovations which allow to develop the industrial network and add high intrinsic value, such as employment, sustainability, technological leadership. The initiative is aimed at both regional and national level, in a short-term time frame (few years).

The Energy Efficiency Spanish Technological Platform (PTE-ee) proposes an ITP on PEDs in the framework of the Plan Estatal de Investigación Científica y Técnica y de Innovación 2017-2020.

The document aims to:

  • Creating a knowledge base and a roadmap that will allow achieving this positive energy transition of Spanish cities, according to established time frames
  • Promoting the development and dissemination of the PEDs for the urban transition towards a sustainable city model, improving the economic benefits

This initiative is led by Paolo Civero and Manel Sanmartí from IREC, and co-authored by researchers and members from CARTIF, CIEMAT, IESE Business School and PTE-ee, with the collaboration of CIRCE and IDAE.
