Final outcomes from the NETBUILD publico-private project

After three years of collaborative work, AMPER S&C IoT (Sensing & Control), Telpark, and IREC have successfully completed the NETBUILD (Smartness Improvement in a Network of Buildings) project. This initiative has developed digital solutions to enhance the energy efficiency and intelligence of buildings through IoT, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and blockchain technologies.

The main objective of NETBUILD has been to design a secure, modular, and scalable platform that optimises energy and resource management in buildings and urban districts. The project has addressed the current challenges of energy transition and building digitalisation, fostering greater interaction between buildings, users, and the power grid.

Within the project, a demonstrator site was deployed in Viladecans (Barcelona), at the Casal de la Montserratina (as shown in the main photograph), where IREC implemented a comprehensive monitoring system to collect real-time data on energy use, environmental conditions, and user activity. These datasets have been essential to train and validate the forecasting algorithms and flexibility estimation models developed by IREC, supporting the creation of reliable and adaptive energy management tools.

Building on these developments, IREC also led the implementation of the integrated energy management system and designed a new dynamic Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) methodology, enabling a more responsive evaluation of building intelligence over time.

To date, IREC has disseminated the project’s results through five scientific publications and participation in six presentations at international conferences, strengthening the scientific and technological impact of NETBUILD.

Among the main achievements of NETBUILD are:

  • The development of an interoperable platform for energy monitoring and optimisation in buildings.
  • The implementation of AI-based predictive tools to improve efficiency, comfort, and emission reduction.
  • The validation of the platform through a real-life demonstrator in Viladecans, confirming its applicability and scalability.
  • The design of a scalable management architecture, adaptable from single buildings to district networks.
