ROAD2H2 will develop a dual compact reforming reactor for hydrogen production

The ROAD2H2 project, that stands for “Reformador cOmpActo Dual para generar Hidrógeno”, has officially started. ROAD2H2 is a granted public-private collaborative project that intends to contribute to the implementation of hydrogen as a power source. The kick-off-meeting of the project was held in Terrassa (Spain) on November 29, 2024.

The main objective of the project is to develop a dual compact reforming reactor for hydrogen production that can solve the transport and distribution problems associated with hydrogen, as well as promoting its use as a power source in vehicles. ROAD2H2 will be using ethanol and methanol as hydrogen carriers, since they facilitate hydrogen transport and storage. The project leverages cutting-edge technologies like additive manufacturing and atomic layer deposition, which are increasingly being adopted across various sectors for their versatility and impact.

ROAD2H2 has a total budget of +370K€ and will run for three years. The project consortium is formed by Viver Clean Tech (formerly known as MMM Energy), the coordinator of ROAD2H2; the Institute for Energy Research in Catalonia (IREC), specifically the Sustainable Fuels group of the Energy Storage, Harvesting and Catalysis Department of IREC; ADDIVAL, and LEITAT.

IREC will lead the investigation, development, and implementation of micro-catalysts  using atomic layer deposition. Additionally, IREC will be responsible to test the efficiency on hydrogen conversion of the technologies developed during the project at lab-scale, and their versatility to work with ethanol or methanol. Then, IREC will supply the micro-catalysts to Viver Clean Tech, who will be in charge of the scale-up at pilot-scale (TRL6) of the investigated technologies.
